Roblox has reached a settlement with the US state of Kansas. The company is paying around 10 million dollars and must, among other things, check ages, give parents more control and limit chat for children. What this means for families in Germany.

Roblox is paying around 10 million dollars in the US state of Kansas and must strengthen its child protection. The Attorney General of Kansas announced this on 29 September 2026. Among other things, Roblox must check the age of all users, give parents more control and limit chat for minors. Some of this already exists on Roblox: according to the Attorney General, Roblox has to introduce or keep these safety rules. The TV station KCTV5 from Kansas City reported on it.
The key points at a glance:
- Money: Roblox will pay 9.8 million dollars over three years to the Attorney General’s office. On top of that, there are 500,000 dollars for an awareness campaign about children’s online safety.
- Duties, among others: Age checks for all users, more control for parents through a linked parent account, and by default minors may only chat with users in the same or a similar age group.
- Penalty for breaking the rules: If Roblox does not stick to the settlement, another 10 million dollars will be due.
What exactly was agreed
A settlement is an agreement between an authority and a company. Both sides decide what the company pays and what it has to change. The details here come from the KCTV5 report and from the Attorney General’s announcement, published by the radio station Newstalk KZRG.
The settlement lists several safety rules and says explicitly that the list is not complete. Three of them affect families most directly.
Age checks for everyone. Roblox must check how old all of its users are, for new and existing accounts. The aim is that everyone only gets content and chat features that suit their age.
More control for parents. Parents should be able to set more things through a parent account that is linked to their child’s account.
Chat by age group. By default, users under 18 may only chat with users in the same or a similar age group. This is meant to keep children from chatting with adult strangers. “By default” means: that is how it is set up if nobody changes anything.
In addition, according to the Attorney General, there will be better chat moderation, among other things, so that conversations do not move to other apps such as Discord, and a rule for Robux: users under 16 may only send Robux to others or receive Robux from others with their parents’ approval.
What we don’t know
Here we keep things clearly separate. These points are neither in the KCTV5 report nor in the Attorney General’s announcement:
- What the settlement changes beyond Kansas. Similar rules already exist on Roblox worldwide, more on that below.
- Which kind of age check the settlement requires. So far, Roblox mainly checks age with an estimate via the camera. How that works is explained in our guide on age estimation on Roblox.
- By when Roblox has to put the rules in place.
- Which age groups the settlement means exactly.
We are not guessing here. As soon as there is confirmed information, we will add it to the article.
For kids and teens: What does this mean for you?
For you in Germany, the settlement probably changes nothing for now. It is about one state in the USA. You may already know some of it: since January 2026, Roblox has required an age check for chat worldwide. After that, by default you only chat with your own age group and the groups right next to it.
Still, it shows something important: authorities think children on Roblox need better protection. Especially when chatting with strangers.
A few rules can help you already today:
- Don’t tell anyone your real name, your address or your school.
- If someone messages you in a weird way in chat or puts pressure on you, tell an adult you trust.
- Don’t switch to other apps just because someone from Roblox asks you to.
- You can block and report players in Roblox. That’s not snitching, that’s smart.
Context for parents
This is our assessment, not a statement from Roblox or the authority.
The settlement is a signal, not a rule for Germany. It applies to Kansas. But similar rules already exist on Roblox worldwide: since January 2026, Roblox has required an age check for chat, according to the Roblox newsroom wherever chat is available. Whether the other points from Kansas will come here too is unclear.
The three points make a good checklist. Age checks, a parent account and chat by age group: that is exactly what an authority is demanding. So check for your own child, too, whether the age in the account is correct, whether a parent account is linked and who is allowed to message your child. You can find out how to set up an account with a parent account in our guide Creating a Roblox account.
The right age matters. On Roblox, many safety settings depend on the age that was entered. If a child is registered as older than they are, some safety rules may not apply.
Talk about chat, not just about settings. No setting replaces a conversation. Children should know they can tell you anything without Roblox being banned straight away. Otherwise they are more likely to stay quiet when something serious happens.
Protect the account as well. A well secured account is harder to take over. You can find out how in the guide Securing your Roblox account.
As of 17 October 2026. It is still unclear what the settlement changes beyond Kansas and by when everything has to be in place. Our sources are the KCTV5 report and the Attorney General’s announcement. We have not seen the text of the settlement itself.
